22 Redondo Basketball Players, Coach Test Positive For Virus
Redondo Union High School boys basketball team members are quarantining following an outbreak after a tournament in Orange County.
REDONDO BEACH, CA — At least 22 Redondo Union High School basketball players, plus a coach, have tested positive for coronavirus following an indoor basketball club tournament earlier this month in Orange County, Easy Reader reports.
"In the basketball program, we have a total of 22 basketball player positive cases and 1 coach," school officials said. "The last positive case of a student who plays basketball was April 17, 2021."
RUHS now has a total of 27 student athlete positive cases, officials said.

"Right now Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the school have identified 27 current cases among student athletes at Redondo Union High School," Los Angeles County Department of Public Health told Patch. "All identified cases are in isolation, and their identified close contacts have been instructed to quarantine."
The first case among the boys basketball players was reported April 1 when a JV player tested positive for the virus.

"The JV parents were notified via email and phone, and no one was deemed exposed (by LA County)," school officials told parents via email.
The second case was April 2, when a varsity player tested positive. Paernts were also notified via email and phone and no one was deemed exposed by county health officials.
"RUHS decided to shut all levels of the program down on Friday, April 9th," officials said. "All families of all levels; Frosh/Soph, JV and Varsity were notified."
"The RBUSD Dashboard updates on a daily basis," officials said. "Confirmed positive cases are added. Past quarantine students are subtracted."
Student athletes and coaches at Redondo Union are tested two times per week before any in-person, team activities — the procedure for all indoor sports at RUHS.
RUHS students returned to campus for in-person instruction after spring break for the first time since the pandemic began. The last year has been a challenge for students and families.
"We’d also like to take this moment to recognize the importance of empathy for all of our RUHS families; whether they have experienced COVID-19 firsthand or not," school officials said. "This pandemic has taken a massive toll on our physical, social, emotional, and mental wellbeing. In these moments, let’s be sure to extend a virtual hand or hug to all of our students, friends, colleagues, and families."
