TORRANCE, CA — Torrance police officers will be out on patrol looking for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs Thursday night, officials said.

The patrol is planned for 6 p.m. Thursday to 3:30 a.m. Friday. It's part of the Torrance Police Department's committment to keeping the public safe while traveling.

“We want everyone to be as safe as possible, especially when they are on the road," Torrance police Sgt. David Koenig said in a statement.

Impaired driving is not just from alcohol, police said.

"Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving," police said. "Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal."

Police urge people who plan on drinking or taking medications that could impact safe driving to plan on staying home.

Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, officials said.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
