EL PORTO, CA — Los Angeles County lifeguards are warning local surfers and swimmers to watch out for dangerous rip tides and high surf following a rip tide rescue in El Porto Thursday morning, as the National Weather Service extends a high surf advisory.

The National Weather Service has extended the High Surf Advisory issued earlier this week through Tuesday at 1 a.m.

"Beachgoers should use caution and be mindful of rip currents and sneaker waves," the National Weather Service reports. "Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help."
