REDONDO BEACH, CA — The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement Thursday for the coastline as beaches begin to close amid the pandemic this July 4 weekend.

Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves are expected to hit the coast in Ventura County, Los Angeles, Catalina and Santa Barbara Island Friday afternoon through Sunday evening, the NWS reports.

Elevated surf could reach 4 to 6 feet with local sets to 7 feet at beaches along the coast.

"There is an increased risk of ocean drowning," the agency reports. "Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore."

"Surf will be highest on exposed south and southwest facing beaches," according to the NWS. "The highest surf is expected Saturday into Saturday night, when High Surf Advisories may be needed."

People are urged to stay safe while the beaches are closed.

"Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers," the agency said. "Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks."
