Letter: Support Jim Light Over Jeff Ginsburg

Jim Light is the better candidate to represent Redondo Beach's City Council District 1, writes Gabrial Groves.

I read Mr. Jeff Ginsburg’s political flyer this weekend and was reminded of the two reasons why someone runs for political office—one is TO SERVE; the other is TO BE SERVED. Ginsburg seems to take a lot of credit for simply voting on the Public Works Commission, never taking a particular stand or position. I guess you don’t have to be productive as long as you’re Steve Aspel’s buddy.

If you look at the major issues facing our town over the last decade, Ginsburg sightings are rare. However, there is one name that surfaces again and again:  Jim Light.

It was Light who alerted the public to AES’ power plant plans through public meetings, local Patch articles and websites. Likewise, Light sounded the alarm regarding the 3000 condos of Heart of the City, the attempt to rezone Torrance Boulevard for hundreds of other condos and the controversial harbor redevelopment. Most importantly, Light’s efforts led to the charter change that gave us all the right to vote on major rezoning issues in our community.

Regardless of your position on these issues, no one can deny that Light has selflessly dedicated countless hours over the last decade because he knows what it means TO SERVE. His vast experience and trusted leadership, including his years as a military officer, prove he has what it takes to do the job. And though I don’t agree with him on every issue, Light has earned my respect and my vote for City Council.
