Colorado Man Suspected Of Stealing Car From Northern California

A stolen vehicle suspect was arrested early Tuesday following a pursuit through the South Bay, according to Redondo Beach police.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — A Colorado man suspected of stealing a vehicle then leading police on a chase from Redondo to Manhattan Beach was taken into custody following a standoff outside a hotel early Tuesday.

Officers located a vehicle reported stolen from San Jose, California, about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday near Artesia and Aviation boulevards in Redondo Beach, Redondo Beach Police Lt. Shawn Freeman said.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle sped away from officers, leading police in a pursuit across the South Bay. The driver drove to a hotel in the 900 block of North Sepulveda in Manhattan Beach, fled from the stolen vehicle and ran inside the hotel complex.

Police contained the area and shut down the intersection near northbound Sepulveda Boulevard at 8th Street about 7:30 a.m., authorities said.

"With the assistance of witnesses and security cameras, officers were able to narrow down the suspect to a hotel room at the hotel complex," Freeman said.

Redondo Beach Police Department SWAT team made attempts to contact the suspect inside the hotel room and after several efforts, they contacted him inside the hotel room. The suspect surrendered to officers and was taken into custody.

Ryan Cross, 39, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and evading police officers. Cross was booked at the Redondo Beach Police Department. His bail was set at $75,000.

Helicopters were flying above the area for several hours. Roads reopened about 10:49 a.m.

Cross is currently scheduled to appear in court April 22, pending the filing of charges with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
