Redondo Beach Receives Grant To Buy Part Of AES Power Plant Site
The City of Redondo Beach has received a $5 million grant to buy part of the AES power plant acreage and convert it into parkland.
REDONDO BEACH, CA -- The City of Redondo Beach is to receive receive a grant of nearly $5 million to help it buy a portion of the soon-to-be-decommissioned AES power plant site and turn it into parkland.
The grant was recently announced by the California Natural Resources Agency announced the grant last week as part of $37 million in allocations under Proposition 68, a $4 billion bond measure passed by voters in June 2018 to fund a wide range of environmental projects.
The $4.8 million will go toward the purchase about 15 acres of the 50-acre site. The power plant, which has been on the waterfront since the 1950s, is scheduled to shut down in 2020.

The city ultimately plans to buy half of the 50-acre natural gas power plant land for roughly $50 million, according to city officials. The city would still need to find other revenue sources to pay the remaining $45-plus million.
