1 Killed, 3 Hurt In Double Rollover Crash On I-8 In Alpine

ALPINE, CA — A 63-year-old woman was killed and three others suffered serious injuries when two vehicles collided and overturned down an embankment on Interstate 8 in Alpine, authorities said Friday.

The crash happened about 6 p.m. Thursday on westbound I-8 near Tavern Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said.

A 65-year-old Chula Vista man was driving a 2006 GMC Sierra pickup on the westbound highway with a 58-year-old Chula Vista woman in the front passenger seat and a 63-year-old San Diego woman in the right rear passenger seat, Garrow said. For unknown reasons, the pickup collided with a westbound 2000 Toyota Solara sedan driven by an 18-year-old Los Angeles man.

The impact caused both vehicles to veer toward the center divide, continue down a descending embankment and overturn, the officer said.

The pickup ended up blocking the far left lane on eastbound I-8, while the Toyota came to rest within the center median.

The pickup's rear seat passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene, Garrow said. Her name was withheld pending family notification.

Both drivers and the pickup's front seat passenger were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment of major injuries, Garrow said.

Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash, he said.
