Amazon Driver Thwarts Would-Be Carjacker: San Diego Police

SAN DIEGO, CA — Package theft is a scourge across the region, but one brazen thief took the crime to a whole new level Saturday when he allegedly tried to carjack an Amazon truck driver in San Diego. However, customers will get their packages thanks to the driver, who managed to evade the would-be carjacker, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The incident triggered a manhunt in the Midway community Saturday evening, and police arrested a 46-year-old man suspected of trying to hold up the Amazon truck with a replica handgun.

The Amazon truck was stopped at the red light a little before 6:25 p.m. Saturday at Sports Arena Boulevard and Hancock Street. According to police, that's when Miguel Gonzalez approached the passenger side of the truck and pointed a gun at the driver. When he tried to open the door, the driver took off, said San Diego police officer Robert Heims.

The truck driver made his way to the Heritage Inn, 3333 Channel Way and called police to report there was a man walking around with a gun, Heims said.

Police set up a perimeter and Gonzalez was taken into custody, he said.

``A gun was found and upon further investigation, it was not real," he said.
