Fast Start Gives San Diego Tennis Team Victory in Carlsbad
The San Diego Aviators withstood a comeback attempt by the Orange County Breakers.

CARLSBAD, CA β The San Diego Aviators won the first three sets to build a 10-game lead over the Orange County Breakers and withstand a comeback attempt in a 23-15 victory in a World TeamTennis match Tuesday night at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
Ryan Harrison opened the match with a 5-2 victory over Dennis Novikov in men's singles. Shelby Rogers defeated Nicole Gibbs, 5-1, in women's singles. Harrison and Raven Klassen teamed for a 5-2 victory over Novikov and Scott Lipsky in men's doubles, giving the Aviators a 15-5 lead.
The Breakers (1-2) began to chip away at the lead when Alla Kudryavtseva and Gibbs defeated Darija Jurak and Rogers, 5-3, in women's doubles.

Orange County also won the final set, mixed doubles, with Lipsky and Kudryavtseva defeating Klassen and Jurak, 5-4.
Under World TeamTennis rules, if the trailing team wins the final set, the match continues in extended play until the leading team wins one game or the match is tied.

The two teams will play again Wednesday night at Breakers Stadium at the Newport Beach Tennis Club, concluding their series of four matches in four nights.
World TeamTennis matches consist of one set each of men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles, with the team winning the most games winning the match.
