Comic-Con International Canceled For 2020 Due To Coronavirus​

"Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures, and while we are saddened to take this action, we know it is the right decision."

SAN DIEGO, CA — Comic-Con International in San Diego has been canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It's the first time the annual pop culture celebration has been canceled in its 50-year history, according to San Diego Comic Convention, the organization behind the event. Comic-Con was scheduled for July 23-26 with a preview night on July 22 at the San Diego Convention Center.

"Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures, and while we are saddened to take this action, we know it is the right decision," spokesman David Glanzer said in a statement Friday. "We eagerly look forward to the time when we can all meet again and share in the community we all love and enjoy."

People who purchased badges for Comic-Con 2020 will have the option to request a refund or transfer their badges to Comic-Con 2021, according to the organization. Badge holders will receive an email within the next week with instructions on how to request a refund.

Exhibitors for Comic-Con 2020 will also have the option to request a refund or transfer their payments to Comic-Con 2021, according to the organization. They will also receive an email within the next week with instructions on how to process their request.

Comic-Con is slated to return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021.

Earlier this week, organizers announced the San Diego County Fair as well as the San Diego Pride parade and other Pride events would also be canceled this summer.
