San Diego International Boat Show Takes Place This Week

See hundreds of boats of all types at the Spanish Landing Park beginning Thursday.

SAN DIEGO, CA -- Hundreds of boats, from luxury yachts to sailboats, will appear at the popular San Diego International Boat Show this week. The event, which typically attracts thousands of boating fans from throughout the west coast, kicks off its four-day run Thursday at the Spanish Landing Park.

In its 16th year, the famed show is known for displaying a variety of boats and hosting seminars and workshops for shoppers and fans. This year, the new technology that’s available in today’s boats are expected to take center stage, said owner and producer of the show, Duncan McIntosh.

“Seeing how technology has changed boating is amazing,” said McIntosh, who started sailing at just 10 years old. “From the satellite to the transmissions, boats are becoming more durable. You can find your location on a chart that has a much greater range than your line of sight.”

McIntosh said the variety of boats will range from Catamarans to classic sailboats, and boats from 30 feet up to 115 feet. Some boats that will be on display will come from places as far away as Europe and Asia.

The show, which typically attracts up to 10,000 guests each year, is particularly helpful to those looking to purchase their first boat, McIntosh said.

Rather than spending months visiting dealerships to determine the best boat that’s right for you, guests can spend three to four hours at the San Diego International Boat Show where they can speak to experts directly.

“You can find out what kind of boat you want or need, the type of commitment you need, the upkeep, the storage,” McIntosh said. “Instead of spending three months doing research, you can do it in three hours at the boat show.”

The annual event will be topped off by live entertainment and a floating tiki bar.

The event runs from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Spanish Landing Park.

Tickets are $15 for adults and free for children 12 and under.
