Organizers for the San Diego Comic Con have set dates for an in-person event and said the organization has suffered a dire loss in revenue.

SAN DIEGO, CA β€” Organizers of the San Diego Comic-Con have picked Thanksgiving weekend to host their three-day in-person convention. If it goes on as planned, it will be Comic-Con's first live event since the onset of the pandemic.

"Comic-Con Special Edition" is scheduled to take place Nov. 26-28 at the San Diego Convention Center. Organizers say they are still crossing their fingers that large public gatherings will be permitted by the fall.

The earmarked dates were also set to hopefully generate "much needed" revenue for the organization and for the local economy, according to David Glanzer, a spokesman for the nonprofit.

"...the loss of revenue has had an acute impact on the organization as it has with many small businesses, necessitating reduced work schedules and reduction in pay for employees among other issues," Glanzer said. "Hopefully this event will shore up our financial reserves and mark a slow return to larger in-person gatherings in 2022."

The dates, which directly follow the Thanksgiving holiday, have received some backlash from some.

"My family missed Thanksgiving last year because of the pandemic," Dan Slott, award-winning comic book author wrote on Twitter. "This year, we'll all be vaccinated. There's no way I'd be attending any event instead of spending that time with them. Even if everything were magically back to normal. I can't imagine others feeling differently."

Details are still being finalized, and further information about badge cost, attendance limits and other elements will be forthcoming, Glanzer said.

On March 1, San Diego Comic-Con announced a free online format dubbed Comic-Con@Home, which is scheduled to take place July 23-25.

"While we are buoyed by the rollout of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it appears that July will still be too early to safely hold an in-person event of the magnitude of Comic-Con," organizers said then.

San Diego Comic-Con 2022 is currently scheduled for July 20-24.
