Marin's Oscar-Nominated Movie Makers Eye Big Night

Local nominees will be in the hunt at the Academy Awards this Sunday.

As in typical nearly every year, several Marin residents will be among those competing in this weekend's 84th Academy Awards.

While some of the biggest movie makers in Marin are well-known, the filmmaker leading the Oscar charge this Sunday is relatively unknown. Novato photographer Robin Fryday is nominated for her short documentary The Barber of Birmingham. Along with being her first Oscar nomination, it was also her first film as director.

This is not the first nomination for Mill Valley resident Ren Klyce, however. Klyce was nominated for sound editing and sound mixing on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, to go with last year's nomination for sound mixing for The Social Network. Klyce has previously been nominated for sound-mixing for Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Marinites Gary Rydstrom and Richard Hymns were nominated for sound editing on Steven Spielberg's War Horse, while Rydstrom, who has won a number of Oscars before, was also nominated for sound mixing that film.

The Mill Valley Film Festival also continued its run as a launching pad for Academy Award contenders with The Artist, which landed the Audience Award at the 34th edition of the festival last October, racking up 10 Oscar nominations.

In addition to The Artist, MVFF34 favorites like the Glenn Cose-starring Albert Nobbs, and My Week With Marilyn also landed several nominations.

Bay Area favorite Moneyball will also be in contention for the Best Picture, with A's General Manager Bill Beane accompanying Brad Pitt, who plays him in the film, to the Academy Awards.

The 84th annual Academy Awards will be televised live from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 26, starting at 5 p.m.
