Pandemic Uncertainty Shrouds Fairfax Festival

FAIRFAX, CA — Just like much else in this pandemic era, the status of one of the Bay Area’s most unique festivals is facing uncertainty.

It’s all but a foregone conclusion that the Fairfax Festival event won’t be held the second weekend of June as it usually is, but the annual event could be held later this year or virtually, festival chairman Larry Bragman told Patch.

“Things are just so unpredictable with COVID,” Bragman said.

“Right now, we’re reopening public and commercial spaces but it’s very hard to predict what things are going to be like 90 days from now. It’s very hard to predict.”

The event typically attracts thousands to this small central Marin town for a weekend of art, music food and a sense of community that differentiates the Fairfax Festival from other events.

“There’s a real sense of historic continuity starting in the 60s, it’s like performance art that’s continued for decades in the spirit of tolerance and art and music and I think it’s got this unique flavor,” Bragman said.

“We’re here in this little town sort of on the outskirts of central Marin that’s always been a bit of an outlier, but people like to come to Fairfax and kind of let their hair down and enjoy the art and enjoy each other.”
