Should San Rafael Ban Plastic Bags?
The city pursues an option that would follow Fairfax's example.

San Rafael is moving forward with a plastic bag ban, according to .
While the county is tied up in litigation with the plastics industry over its 2011 ban, the town to our east is moving forward with considering a similar ban on plastic bags and plastic take-out containers. Last week, according to :
...the City Council met with staff and community members to discuss how to proceed drafting the ordinance, which would prohibit plastic single-use bags in pharmacies, convenience stores and grocery stores, as well as impose a 5-cent fee on paper bags. The ordinance would also ban plastic take-out containers at local restaurants.

The city would be following in the footsteps of Fairfax, which passed a plastic bag ban by voter approval in 2008. Fairfax, similarly, was faced with a lawsuit over an ordinance approved by the town council, but avoided the legal challenges by bringing it directly to the voters.
Some stores, like , have voluntarily stopped providing plastic bags.
