SAN CARLOS, CA — San Mateo County's overall crop values neared $150 million last year, county officials said Tuesday.

Crop values were up $6.5 million last year to $149.2 million, according the 2018 Agricultural Crop Report. Among all crops, indoor flowers and potted plants had the greatest value at $87.9 million as growers benefited from buyers serving high-end hotels, Colma's cemeteries and restaurants that decorate with flowers.

Fred Crowder, the county's agricultural commissioner said: "San Mateo County growers are mostly known for top-quality vegetables. What most people don't know is that indoor flowers and potted plants are our top crop in terms of value."

Crowder said the weather has been perfect for growers of potted plants and indoor flowers because it hasn't been too hot or too cold. Among vegetables, Brussels sprouts had the highest crop value at $14.2 million.

Crowder shared that fact with the Board of Supervisors and gave an overview of the report to them Tuesday, according to county officials.
