My daughter graduated in REDACTED from Dana Hills High School in the CAPO school district with a 4.5 GPA. She applied to UCLA and UCI and she was denied admission to both universities.
I just read your article about the fact that under California law the top 12.5 % of students should have had guaranteed admittance to a UC of their choice and that California Taxpayers paid $28,000.00 for a seat that should have gone to my daughter but was “sold” to out-of-State and “out-of-country” students for a tuition of $43,000.00. The UC system says that the out-of-country seats are important for “diversity” and a large percentage of those seats were sold to Chinese students! Guess what? My 4.5 GPA daughter is Chinese!!! She was adopted from China in 2001 at the age of two, and attended K-12 in the CAPO district as a resident of Laguna Niguel, California.

I figure that the UC system owes my daughter the $28,000.00 per year that she was entitled to from the state of California.
She is currently completing her Freshman year in a private University which has a tuition of $52,000.00 this year, going up to $54,000.00 next year.
You may use our story without names. Another consequence of my daughter not being admitted to UCI is that she will now have to pay for a 5th year for her teaching credential instead of graduating with her science major with a teaching credential in 4 years in UCI’s special program.
Thank you,

Graduating High School and awaiting your college acceptance use to be a very special time for students and families. It is not the same anymore. The process is long, draining and very expensive. The reward; especially for California's best and brightest, is not there.
Students that graduate in the Top 12.5% of their high school class have been promised a world class education at the University of California. It is devastating for these students to work so hard only to have their dreams unexpectedly crushed at a time when they should be looking forward to so many new and exciting opportunities.
The State of California and the University of California have been breaking their promise to 10,000+ students a year since 2011.
The financial damage to this family is $54,000 X 5 years = $270,000 + the extra year of school is one year of lost income. She should have graduated in 4 years and started a new job where she made money rather than spend money for a 5th year of school.
Shouldn't the dreams of CA Resident Students matter too?
