Don't Get Caught In This Check-Cashing Scam

Beware this scam that has people in Carson on the hook for being Good Samaritans.

There are all kinds of scams out there with people anxious to take your money, including one in Carson that includes a check-cashing scam carried out by two women.

The women persuaded unsuspecting victims to cash checks on their behalf in return for a small fee, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department statement.

Several days after cashing the checks, the victims were informed by their banks that the checks were fraudulent, and that they would be held responsible for reimbursing the full amount.

The scam took place on Aug. 7 and 8.

Anyone with information is requested to contact the watch commander at the Carson station at (310) 830-1123, or, if anonymity is preferred, Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.   

The moral of the story locally: Don't cash checks that aren't yours.
