JSerra Catholic High School Lacrosse Coach Moves On To Law School

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — JSerra Catholic High School Girls' Lacrosse will see a new head coach this year. Coach Maggie Mawhinney resigned to pursue a degree in law, athletic director Chris Ledyard reported Friday. This is the first major coaching change in Orange County in advance of a new and complicated sports season.

JSerra Girls' Lacrosse was on their way to a stellar season at the coronavirus shutdown in March. Now, their future is uncertain.

"We have tremendous respect for Maggie and how she helped resurrect our Girls' Lacrosse program," Ledyard said. "We are sad to see her go but congratulate her on moving her educational aspirations forward. What an opportunity for her."

Mawhinney began her work with the program in the 2017-18 school year, and also was an educator at the school.

"Under her guidance, the girls' lacrosse program reached academic heights with a team GPA of 3.46," Ledyard says.

The program achieved CIFSS honorable mention Academic Awards.

Mawhinney also mentored 2020 graduate Senior Olivia Mofetta, who was JSerra Scholar Athlete of the year.
