Minivan Collides With Big Rig, Overturns In Dramatic Crash

A minivan collided with a big rig Friday morning, bringing traffic on the 5 southbound to a standstill.

MISSION VIEJO, CA — Drivers heading south to San Juan Capistrano experienced major slowing Friday, following a dramatic crash between a minivan and a big rig. Just before 11 a.m. on the 5 Freeway south of Oso Parkway, the van and rig collided, according to California Highway Patrol reports.

The van ended up overturned on the right shoulder, landed on its roof, sliding down an embankment, CHP reported. One driver sustained "minor injuries to their left hand," according to reports.

It was unclear as of this report if anyone else was hurt in the crash, or the actual cause of the incident.

CHP requested a SIGALERT for about an hour, during the cleanup of the collision.

Traffic remained slow on both sides of the freeway around the crash area, and was backed up to El Toro Road, as of noon, Friday.

The closure of the #4 lane was expected until at least 12:15 p.m., according to CHP.
