Ortega Construction Week of April 21

Here's what you need to know about traveling San Juan Capistrano's major highway near the I-5 this week.

On Friday, April 5, crews restricted pedestrian access on the north side of the Ortega Highway bridge over the I-5 freeway. This closure will last approximately two weeks and is necessary as crews work to demolish the barrier rail and sidewalk on the north side of the bridge in order to prepare for the demolition of the south side of the bridge this summer.

Pedestrians will be directed to use the sidewalk on the south side of the bridge until a new sidewalk is constructed in mid-April. While crews construct the new pedestrian walkway on the bridge, there will be intermittent nighttime lane closures on the I-5 freeway.

Please be advised that this work may be loud and disruptive due to demolition and other construction activities.

Crews have completed vegetation and tree removal along the northbound I-5 freeway and will complete removal along the southbound I-5 freeway early next week. This activity is necessary to accommodate the widened and new on- and off-ramps as well as the new Ortega Highway bridge over the I-5 freeway. Upon project completion, Caltrans will replace the vegetation in the area.
