"Resurgam: The Rise of the Mission in the 1920s"

Exhibit Features Rare Historic Photos from Mission San Juan's Archival Collection

Mission San Juan Capistrano announces their first exhibit following two pandemic-related closures, fittingly entitled, “Resurgam: The Rise of the Mission in the 1920s.” Featuring images never before displayed in public, the exhibit of original historic photographs from the Mission’s archival collection highlights some of the many restoration efforts at the Mission during the 1920s. Resurgam is a Latin term meaning, “I Shall Rise Again.”

“Our newest exhibit celebrates the Mission’s evolution and revival over the past 100 years as a result of dedicated and ongoing preservation. We welcome guests to experience the Mission’s rich history and hope they’ll leave with a sense that they’ve helped the landmark “rise again” under uncertain conditions of the past year thereby playing a part in the Mission’s ongoing history,” said Mission San Juan Capistrano Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence Adams.

The exhibit features reproduced and enlarged photographs focused in the 1920s, a great time for renewal and restoration at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Led by then Pastor Father St. John O’Sullivan (Mission Pastor 1914-1933) and Charles Lummis, Founder of the California Landmarks Club, this important time in the Mission’s history ushered in the era of restoration, conservation and stewardship that continues to this day.
