Trading Hoops For The Youth: JSerra Basketball Coach Retiring

JSerra coach is trading hoops for the youth, saying goodbye to OC & heading out to be Youth Pastor for Stonehill Church in Meridian, Idaho.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — JSerra head basketball coach Zach Brogdon announced he is retiring from coaching. He steps down after leading the Lions as head coach for the past two seasons. Brogdon is stepping away from his role at JSerra to become the new High School Youth Pastor for Stonehill Church in Meridian, Idaho.

JSerra was 18-9 this year and lost to Villa Park in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs. In both
seasons at the helm, Brogdon guided JSerra to 5-5 records in the tough Trinity league, tying the
school record. Last season he took the Lions to the Open Division, a first for the school, finishing with an 18-12 record and a trip to the CIF State Regionals. He finishes his time at JSerra with a 36-21 overall record and a 10-10 league record.

Brogdon is thankful for his time at JSerra and prior to that at Capistrano Valley Christian School.

He retires with 161 wins in his 8 seasons as a varsity head coach.

“I’ve been blessed to coach the game of basketball for the last 11 years. From the beginning of
my career I have had the love and support of so many people,” Brogdon said. “I would like to
thank my Mom, Dad and brother for helping me start my career at CVCS. I would like to thank
my best friend and mentor Dave King for teaching me all I know about basketball and coaching
with me these last eight seasons.

“I would like to thank all the players, parents, faculty, and coaches that I have had the blessing
to serve alongside. I would also like to thank President Rich Meyer for giving me the
opportunity to coach at JSerra. Finally, I would like to thank my amazing wife Mackenzie for her endless love and support.

“While making the choice to retire from coaching was challenging and filled with emotion, my
wife and I are excited to serve the Lord at Stonehill Church and begin this new adventure
together.”

JSerra Principal Eric Stroupe is grateful for Brogdon’s work at the school, especially his ability to infuse spiritual lessons amidst the X’s and O’s of coaching basketball. As Stroupe noted, “Coach Brogdon is about as competitive as it comes on the court, but he cares just as much about developing his players’ spiritual lives, and for that we are grateful for the two years he spent at JSerra. We wish him well in his new professional journey.”

Athletic Director Chris Ledyard plans to lead a national search for Brogdon’s replacement. He
stated, “We are confident that the high profile of our team and league, combined with our
tradition of winning and first-class facilities, will attract outstanding candidates to lead our program. Zach has been a standout JSerra coach. Zach, his life philosophy, and his transformational coaching style are what JSerra is about. He will be difficult to replace.”

Ledyard noted that Coach Brogdon has already been helpful in identifying potential
replacements and will be instrumental in a smooth transition to a new coach. The school will be
taking applications for the head coach position through March 9.
