Two Arrested after SJC I-5 Pursuit into SD County

A man and woman are held on suspicion of stolen property and narcotics violations, in addition to failure to yield.

California Highway Patrol officers arrested a man and a woman Thursday night after an I-5 Freeway pursuit from San Juan Capistrano into San Diego County.

The woman, Taysha Rene Werner, 23, had a $15,000 warrant out for her arrest on controlled substances charges, officials said. The CHP – which took over the chase from a San Juan sheriff's deputy – found drugs and stolen property in the vehicle, said Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Joe Balicki.

A deputy tried to pull over Szarowicz's white truck at 11:52 p.m. on the 5 just south of Ortega Highway, but the vehicle failed to stop, Balicki said. The CHP soon took the lead in the pursuit, he said.

The driver, Brandon Curtis Szarowicz, 31, maintained legal speed and finally pulled over south of the truck scales, Balicki said.

Both Werner and Szarowicz were in the county jail's Intake Release Center and scheduled to appear in court Jan. 14. Werner's bail was set at $40,000, while Szarovicz's was $25,000.
