Coroner IDs Sleeping Woman Fatally Struck By Suspected DUI Driver

A 21-year-old Santa Rosa man is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol in the fatal crash.

SANTA ROSA, CA — A woman killed when a suspected drunk driver hit her parked car early Monday while she was asleep was identified by the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office as Kellie Nora Michelle, 50, of Santa Rosa.

Angel Ivan Martinez, 21, also of Santa Rosa, was heading home from a friend's house when his speeding black Dodge Challenger struck Michelle's Mazda SUV on eastbound Hoen Avenue east of Cypress Avenue around 3 a.m., Santa Rosa police Sgt. Summer Gloeckner said.

The impact of the crash sent Michelle's car onto the front yard of a residence on Hoen Avenue.

According to police, Michelle was a transient who was known to sleep in her car at other locations in the city. Her dog, a pit bull mix, was in the car with her and also died, Gloeckner said.

A second car — a black Prius parked on Hoen with no one inside — was also hit by Martinez's car, police said.

All three cars were totaled.

Martinez was treated for minor injuries at a hospital, then was booked into Sonoma County Jail under $100,000 bail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and two counts of felony DUI.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Sonoma County Superior Court.
