Flue Fire Shuts Down Maya Restaurant

Investigators believe a kitchen flue started the blaze, which slowed downtown for almost an hour Monday while fire officials put it out

 

West Napa Street was packed with pedestrians Monday as firefighters battled a blaze in , believed to be caused by a kitchen flue.

About 20 firefighters, four engines, a ladder truck and two ambulances were called to the scene at 2:15 p.m. from the . It took personal about a half an hour to put out the fire, which spread to the attic through the restaurant's floor beams, according to Div. Chief Spencer Andreis.

The fire caused structural damage to the flue and caused fire personal to break through several walls to get into the attic space. "When you have a fire in the flue it kind of goes up... it went through floors, it is kind of a tough deal," he said.

The building complex, which houses offices including the Sonoma International Film Festival, was evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The fire was isolated to the Maya Restaurant space; there's been no word yet from management on when the restaurant will re-open.

"Any time you have a fire in a restaurant like that you have to do a pretty extensive clean up for health department issues," said Division Chief Spencer Andreis

The department will finalize investigations on the fire's causes Tuesday.
