Sunset Magazine Settles into Oakland Offices

The move from Menlo Park includes shifting the magazine's test gardens to Sonoma.

The writers and editors of Sunset magazine have left their lovely, seven-acre Menlo Park compound for the city life - settling into the second floor of a building in Oakland’s Jack London Square. In addition to executive and editorial offices, the space houses a Test Kitchen and Wine Cellar.

When the new offices were selected last year, Editor-in-Chief Peggy Northrup expressed her pleasure with the urban selection, “Cities like Oakland are at the heart of some of the most exciting trends and innovations coming out of the West, and we’re thrilled to be where the action is. We’re especially looking forward to moving to such a vibrant neighborhood, where readers will have the chance to interact with the Sunset brand each and every day.”

Sunset’s new test garden and outdoor kitchen are in Sonoma, at Cornerstone. Kenwood Cornerstone CEO Darius Anderson was pleased when the partnership was announced, “Partnering with a brand like Sunset is one of the most exciting things to happen in the wine country in a long time. We hope this is just the beginning of what Cornerstone and Sunset can do together to bring more food, wine and garden education to the region.”

Left behind is Menlo Park. The serene campus on San Francisquito Creek was beloved by Sunset fans who flocked to the compound each year for Celebration Weekend, which showcased food, wine and gardening. The New York Times described the property in 2014, noting “The buildings were designed by Cliff May, the architect many consider the father of the California ranch home. His work helped articulate in architecture the postwar West Coast suburban boom and spawned a lifestyle that Sunset embraced.”

The entire campus has been sold to Embarcadero Capital Partners, a real estate investment and management company.
