Fairfield Man Killed in Interstate 80 Crash

The Solano County coroner’s office has identified a vehicle occupant who died in a rear-end crash on westbound Interstate Highway 80 Saturday morning as Jonathan Windrell Fitzgerald, 58, of Fairfield.

Fitzgerald was seated inside a vehicle that was stopped and blocking the No. 5 lane of westbound I-80 east of Waterman Boulevard in Fairfield, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Jeffery James Brandt, 54, of Oroville, also was driving west in a separate vehicle around 3:30 a.m. on the highway and failed to see the vehicle stopped ahead of him, according to the CHP.

Fitzgerald suffered major injuries in the rear-end collision. He was taken to NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield, where he died at 4:25 a.m., according to the coroner’s office.

It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, CHP officials said.
