The Hiker’s Guide to Mount Diablo State Park, a perfect stocking stuffer for hiking novices and aficionados, offers hikes to suit all park visitors, with distances ranging from less than half a mile, to a full marathon that circumnavigates the mountain.

The book can be purchased for $15 at the Summit Visitor Center, the Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center, or online at MDIA.org.

Mount Diablo State Park is truly an island of wilderness surrounded by a metropolis. With its oak and pine woodlands, canyons, cliffs, meadows and chaparral, along with fine views from the highest peak in the region, it offers a quick get-away and an instant change of pace for East Bay residents and visitors. Its trails satisfy people of every age, interest and ability: walkers, hikers, bikers, rock-climbers and equestrians. Lovers of birds, wildflowers and butterflies will also find rich flora and fauna on the mountain.

The guide is organized into five geographic locations covering the park: North, South, Interior, West and East, allowing for a quick overview of the hikes in any area. Each trailhead is given detailed treatment, including an easy-to-read map, a full description of the route, a graph of the elevation changes, a difficulty rating, the trail’s overall length and some illustrative photos.
