Scholarship concert honors Vallejo Fire Department legend
Legacy of Chief John Wells inspires at risk youth to serve their community as first responders
SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER CONCERT CELEBRATES VALLEJO’S FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN FIREFIGHTER’S LEGACY OF SERVICE AND COMMUNITY
Vallejo, Calif. | A special concert to benefit the scholarship program for the Vallejo Firefighter Youth Academy will honor the legacy of Chief John H. Wells who became Vallejo’s first African American firefighter when he was hired in 1964. Chief Wells served the department for 28 years, attaining the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. He passed away in March 2017.
The concert will be held Saturday, August 24 at the beautiful Empress Theatre, 330 Virginia Street, Vallejo. The evening will feature music by saxophonist Brian Gerrard and world fusion group "Five Ten Music.” The evening will be a fitting tribute to Chief Wells and the cadets of the Robbin Mackbee Firefighter/EMS Youth Academy under the auspices of the nonprofit organization Solutions for At Risk Youth Inc. (SFARY).
