Solano Co. Supes Approve Switching Shelter Services Provider

Shelter Solano Inc. will take over homeless shelter and other services from Mission Solano.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — The Solano County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement with a nonprofit to provide temporary housing, shelter and related services for people with persistent mental illness.

The agreement is between Feb. 1 and June 30 with Shelter Solano Inc., part of Concord-based Shelter, Inc. The nonprofit is taking over the operations of a shelter currently operated by Mission Solano on Beck Avenue in Fairfield but is closing at the end of January.

The $700,000 agreement with Shelter Solano Inc. comes from two state grants to help the mentally ill.

The interim housing services will be for a maximum of nine months with six months considered a typical length of stay.

The agreement provides for an average daily population of up to 50 seriously mentally ill people who are homeless or imminently at risk of becoming homeless, being discharged from jail, or referred by law enforcement.

The board on Tuesday afternoon was also to continue discussions on another agreement with Shelter Solano Inc. to provide housing and other services for homeless individuals at the former Mission Solano shelter in Fairfield for 10 years.

Solano County would provide Shelter Solano Inc. with up to $270,000 in matching startup funds between Feb. 1 and Jan. 31, 2020.
