Solano College Literary Magazine Takes 2nd Place In Competition

Suisun Valley Review is "a testament to its rich history and a portent of finer things to come."

SOLANO COUNTY, CA – Solano Community College’s Suisun Valley Review literary magazine recently received second place in Best Overall Small College Literary Magazine in the Pacific-Western Division at the Community College Humanities Association Competition.

“The students of Spring 2018 created an exemplary magazine, a testament to its rich history and a portent of finer things to come,” said advisor Michael Wyly. “Suisun Valley Review also works closely with the SCC Writers Series by inviting key authors as features. This year’s featured poet was Lisa Abraham.”

In cooperation with Wyly, Suisun Valley Review’s editors worked to establish a student-centered environment to enhance the literary experience while empowering themselves in the creation of every aspect of the magazine, including selection of overall design aesthetic and narrative development in each issue, school officials said.

Student-editors collaborate to select content from new and established writers and artists from Solano, across the country, and around the world. Each year, the magazine publishes the winner of Solano’s student writing competition, the Quinton Duval Award in Creative Writing. In 2018, the award was given to Anthony Shemaria for his poem, “The Hunt.”

To be part of the competition, schools are divided into five divisions based on college size and magazine budget. Awards for first through third place plus honorable mention are given each year in addition to an overall national award winner. Included in Solano’s division are schools from California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska.
