Students: Poster Contest to Enter
Missing school, including excused absences, quickly takes a toll on learning.

Solano County Office of Education has joined a nationwide initiative to celebrate Attendance Awareness Month in September and has pledged to raise awareness about the value of regular school attendance
focusing on reducing chronic absenteeism in the new school year.
Solano County Office of Education recognizes that good attendance is essential to academic success, but too often students, parents and schools don’t realize how quickly absences, excused or unexcused, can add up to academic trouble.

Far too many students are at risk academically because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing 10 percent of the school year (or about 18 days) for any reason, (excused or unexcused).
Research shows this is the point at which absenteeism begins to affect student performance.

This matters to all of us, not just to those with school-age children. When our schools graduate more students, on time, our communities and our economy is stronger.
In September, schools, city agencies, community nonprofits, businesses and others around the nation are committing time and resources to raise public awareness, map local attendance gaps and work with community partners to improve school attendance starting as soon as children enter school.
In our efforts to raise awareness this year, the Solano County Office of Education is once again sponsoring a
County-Wide poster, public service announcement and t-shirt design contest. We are seeking entries for a peer-to-peer contest among students as a part of the overall effort to improve school attendance in Solano County.
Students will be given the chance to create a poster, record a public service announcement, or design a t-shirt with messages that will focus on the importance of regular school attendance and win prizes.
Please join Solano County Office of Education in taking action to educate our students on the seriousness of
chronic absences. Together we can make a difference and help all students succeed academically.
Entries are to be submitted no later than Friday, September 30, 2016. Send to:
Golden Hills Education Center- Bldg 5
