If You Ever Wanted To Try Solar Power, Now's The Time
Free setup and Uncle Sam's incentives might not be around forever. [SPONSORED]

We all know solar energy is good for the planet, but did you know that it's good for your wallet, too?
It's true: As soon as you make the switch to solar power, you'll see an immediate decrease in your energy bills. The value of your home is likely to increase, too, and you may even get some money back from Uncle Sam for reducing your carbon footprint.
No matter how you look at it, you get green by going green, and if you've ever even thought about switching to renewable energy, there's never been a better time than right now to do it.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, but you don't have to buy the restaurant that serves it to you. The same is true for solar energy! Thanks to something called a power purchase agreement (PPA), you can pay for solar power without having to purchase solar panels.

Horizon Solar, southern California's local leader in solar power energy, offers this form of long-term lease. It is responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing the equipment for the duration of the PPA. As the customer, you only pay for the solar power produced based on a low fixed rate that's typically less than what your local utility company charges.
Start Saving Sooner
Why waste money when you don't have to? The sooner you make the switch to solar, the sooner you'll see your energy costs go down. The higher energy costs are in your area, the more savings you'll see. According to NerdWallet's estimates, the average solar power user will save $600 annually on energy bills. Mental Floss puts that number even higher, estimating that the average solar customer savings over a 20-year period will be $20,000.
That's not all, though: Because you've agreed to pay your solar provider a set rate, you're able to protect yourself from any future utility rate spikes. So even if the price of fossil fuels goes through the roof, your rates for solar power will stay the same.
Cash In Before It's Too Late
If you're planning to buy panels, you'll get more bang for your buck if you do it sooner rather than later. If you purchase a solar system that's placed into service before the end of 2019, the federal government offers a 30 percent tax credit. The rebate amount goes down 26 percent for systems installed through the end of 2020 and 22 percent for those installed through the end of 2021.
Some states, including California, provide additional credits for homeowners or small businesses switching to renewable energy sources. If you're hoping to nab a rebate from your state, don't dawdle: Some of these state-issued credits are already being phased out, and this will likely continue to happen as the solar industry expands.
