Last Time RivCo Gas Price Was This High: May 2014

It's been more than six years since gasoline was this expensive.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Riverside County was unchanged Monday, holding at $4.217, one day after rising three-tenths of a cent to its highest amount since May 9, 2014.

The average price has risen seven of the past nine days, increasing 4.1 cents, including 1.1 cents on Saturday, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. It is 3.9 cents higher than one week ago, 9.5 cents more than one month ago and $1.178 greater than a year ago.

The average price has risen $1.041 since the start of the year because of a sharp increase in the oil price and increased demand because more people are driving to work, according to Jeffrey Spring, the Automobile Club of Southern California's corporate communications manager.

The large price increases from one year ago are partially the result of significant decreases during the early stage of the coronavirus pandemic, when driving and demand dropped substantially because of stay-at-home orders intended to reduce the spread of the virus.
