MLB Player, Temecula Resident, Doing Well After Brain Hemorrhage

"He's a fighter, and he's in the fight of his life right now,'' the team's vice president Ken Williams told USA Today.

TEMECULA, CA — MLB pitcher Danny Farquhar, who lives in Temecula during the offseason, is "progressing well" after suffering a brain hemorrhage and ruptured aneurism in the middle of a game in Chicago on Friday.

Farquhar, a reliever for the Chicago White Sox, vomited in the sixth inning and then collapsed from the aneurysm. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in Chicago and underwent a procedure to treat the swelling over the weekend. The team's vice president Ken Williams told USA Today that Farquhar was in "the fight of his life."

“He’s a fighter, and he’s in the fight of his life right now,’’ Williams said. “They had to do another surgery, cracking his skull open and putting a clamp on it. My God, this certainly shows the fragility of life and how we take every day for granted. And it can change in a heartbeat. Literally.”

On Monday afternoon, the team said the surgery to address the aneurism was successful and that Farquhar was recovering.

"Farquhar has use of his extremities, is responding appropriately to questions and commands and is speaking to doctors and his family," the team said in a statement.

His wife, Lexie, and relatives were at the game on Friday against the Houston Astros and remain with him at the hospital as he undergoes treatment and close monitoring. He was “in critical, but neurologically stable” condition, the team said, and will probably remain in the neurological intensive care unit of the hospital for a few weeks.

Farquhar is a father of three children between the ages of 7 months and 6 years.

"We are very happy that he is trending in the right direction," White Sox manager Rick Renteria told MLB.com. "To know that he is able to move and able to speak and know his family is there, he knows everybody cares for him. We're going in the right direction and we're guardedly optimistic about the outcome."

Farquhar was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 2008 draft. He made his major league debut with the Blue Jays in 2011.

Farquhar is 10-15 with a sub-4.00 ERA in just over 250 relief appearances with Toronto, the Seattle Mariners, the Tampa Bay Rays and the White Sox.
