All children 8 years or younger must be properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat, in the back seat of a vehicle. Children under the age of 2 must ride in a rear-facing, age-appropriate child safety seat in the back seat, the CHP said.

An unrestrained child in a vehicle "is at significant risk of injury or death" in the event of a crash, the CHP said. "Protect your children by using age-appropriate passenger restraint devices. Your child’s life depends on that car seat."
