Flash Flood Watch: Voluntary Evacuation For Holy Fire Burn Scar

A flash flood watch was expected to continue across the county Monday. A voluntary evacuation order was given for areas prone to mudslides.

TRABUCO CANYON, CA — A flash flood watch continued Monday across Orange County's inland cities, the National Weather Service reported. The Orange County Sheriff's Department has issued a voluntary Evacuation Warning for Monday afternoon in for the Holy Fire burn areas and surrounding locations.

"This is due to potential flooding and debris flows, with heaviest rainfall expected this afternoon through 7 p.m.," an OCSD spokesperson said.

Flooding and debris flows are possible and evacuation routes can quickly become impassible, they said.

Elsewhere, Orange County cities of Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, San Clemente, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Irvine, Orange, Fullerton, and Mission Viejo were expected to be affected by possible flooding through late Monday.

"Heavy rainfall of 1- to 2-inches, locally higher, was forecast to occur across the southland," the NWS said. "There is the potential of mud slides and debris flows at recent burn scars, particularly near the Holy Fire burn scar."

Debris flows happen suddenly with little time to act, though the Orange County Department of Public Works set erosion control and water diversion sand bags in place. The possibility of minor flooding and debris flows remain.

All residents were asked to monitor forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued. Always heed advice of local officials, do not drive into flooded streets and turn around, don't drown.
