Broadway Plaza Owners Get Control Of Important Culvert

The final brick is now in place for Broadway Plaza's $250 million renovation.

On Tuesday night, the Walnut Creek City Council approved a four-party agreement to transfer control of 200 feet of culvert to the Macerich company, allowing them to proceed with the four-year renovation.

The council approved the renovation project in December, but Macerich needed control of the culvert for some of its remodeling plans.

Sandra Meyer, the city's community and economic development director, said the agreement approved Tuesday night transfers control of the San Ramon Creek culvert from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Contra Costa County Flood Control District to the city of Walnut Creek and Macerich.

Macerich is responsible for maintenance while the city enforces the maintenance agreement.

Meyer said a congressional bill that would have approved the transfer has been stalled in committee, so the culvert agreement was done as an administrative action by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The demolition of some of the stores between Macy's and Nordstrom could now start as early as next month.

The 40 stores in that east wing of the center have been told to vacate the premises by next Friday. More than half of the shops have already closed.
