Comment of the Day: Walnut Heights Residents Don't Want A 70-Foot Cell Tower

Verizon plans to install the tower at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in the Walnut Heights area of Walnut Creek. A public hearing will be held April 15.

"Can you hear me now?" asked one commenter on a recent Patch poll about cell phone service in Walnut Creek. The commenter wanted to know why Patch was asking about cell service at a time when Walnut Heights residents are battling against the installation of a 70-foot Verizon cell tower at St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

"If this tower passes, it will set a huge [precedent] which residents throughout Walnut Creek will have to live with," said the commenter identified as "3rd generation in the WC". "So if you think you're not impacted...think again."

Residents opposing the Verizon cell tower, which will be diguised to look like a eucalyptus tree on the northwest corner of the church's property, say that it will be a visual blight and decrease home property value, in addition to posing health risks. A public hearing will be held on April 15, 2013 at the Department of Conservation & Development, 30 Muir Rd, Martinez. The deadline to submit comments is April 5. "It's going to be a monumental eye-sore and a permanent reminder of the church's indifference to the welfare of its neighbors and community," said another Patch commenter. "They aren't doing this as a service to Walnut Creek, or even Verizon. They're doing it for the rental income."
