Cormorant Chick Rescued After Fall From Nest

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Lindsay Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital in Walnut Creek gets a lot of wild land critters and birds as patients, but a cormorant is a rare sight.

A double-crested cormorant chick was taken there last week after it fell from its nest in Alameda. After being checked over, it was transferred to the International Bird Rescue in Fairfield.

Lindsay encourages folks to watch for cormorants, "You...will see them float low on the surface of water and dive to catch small fish. They often travel in V-shaped flocks that shift and reform as the birds alternate bursts of choppy flapping with short glides."

When fully grown, the bird will be somewhere between the size of a crow and a goose. If all goes well, it will be returned to the wild.
