Ruth Bancroft, 104 Years Old, Visits Her Namesake Walnut Creek Garden

Garden founder pays a visit to her iconic Walnut Creek locale.

The woman responsible for the original Ruth Bancroft Garden, 104-year-old Ruth Bancroft, paid a visit to her garden earlier this month to see the latest installation, the Living Wall. Bancroft will turn 105 on Sept. 3.

The wall consists of cattle fencing and felt, filled with soil and planted on the top and sides with succulents and drought tolerant plants. Large sections of a Valley oak tree that stood nearby and was chopped down in 2003 for safety reasons is also included in the wall.

It will continue to be filled in as the fall, and more moderate temperatures, arrive.

The Ruth Bancroft Garden is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is located at 1552 Bancroft Rd.
