Big-name prospects have signed for as much as a half-million dollars for a single season to prep for the NBA draft.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Walnut Creek has been chosen as the site for an NBA G-League professional pathway program team, according to reports. The G-League is billed as a pathway to the NBA, separate from NCAA basketball.

According to SF Gate, the G-League is a one-year academy where players develop their skills in the hope of being selected by a team in the NBA draft. The Walnut Creek team will play against other G-League teams, international squads, and NBA practice teams.

Several players have signed on for the G-League program with players getting paychecks as high as $500,000 for the 5-month program.

While no announcement has been made on where the team will play, the John Muir Health Ultimate Fieldhouse on Mitchell Drive is touted as the likely venue. That's where the Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry holds basketball camps for boys and girls.

Online reaction has been mixed, with some readers questioning how the G-League team can compete with the Warriors, and others having fun picking out a team name.
