Lakewood Celebrates Earth Day: Art, Activities, Giveaways

LAKEWOOD, CO — The city of Lakewood is celebrating Earth Day this year with a mix of public art, educational opportunities, activities and sustainability initiatives.

The city's traditional Earth Day festival will be replaced with a celebration that residents can experience from their homes, neighborhoods and parks.

Earth Day is April 22, but the city's festivities will begin this weekend.

Here's a list of activities and initiatives:

• Beginning Saturday, you can check out chalk art installations at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park.
• Residents can sign up Saturday for free giveaways of upcycled Earth Day yard signs and energy conservation kits with LED lightbulbs and additional resources.
• The LandMark public art exhibit will open Saturday in 10 Lakewood parks.
• The city is set to post an Earth Day video playlist Saturday online of greetings from the community, educational snippets, deep dives into a variety of sustainability topics, highlights from community partners about their work and sustainability efforts, and promotions for sustainable products and services.
• The city is planning to post a family-friendly checklist of fun and practical at-home activities to make an impact. An early list can be found here under 'At-Home Earth Day Activities.'

The city continued its poster contest tradition, and longtime Lakewood resident Scott Traut was the 2021 winner. His artwork will be displayed in the city's event materials over the next two months.
