The Can't-Miss Food In Connecticut: The Daily Meal

The Daily Meal recently declared the one food you can't leave Connecticut without sampling. Do you agree with the choice?

CONNECTICUT — From a coastal seafood delicacy to a hearty Midwestern sandwich, each state, including Connecticut, has that one iconic food every local loves and every visitor should try.

The Daily Meal recently compiled its list of the one can't-miss food in each state. To determine which delicacy made the cut, staff at The Daily Meal looked through local and regional publications, focusing on discussions of food and restaurant recommendations. It also combed through restaurant reviews to narrow down contenders according to deliciousness, availability outside the state and how beloved the food is by locals.

In Connecticut, white clam apizza is one that's just not as good in other states — if you can even find it in other states, according to The Daily Meal. Sometimes known as New Haven-style pizza, apizza is best identified by its slightly oblong shape, coal-fired smokiness and crisp, chewy and slightly charred crust. The white clam version is a hyperlocal specialty. The original version at Frank Pepe's at 57 Wooster Street in New Haven, which is topped with chopped clams, garlic, olive oil, oregano and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, is so good that the Daily Meal consistently ranks it No. 1 on their list of the best pizzas in America. If the line is too long at Frank Pepe's, the Daily Meal also highly recommends the white clam apizza at Sally's (237 Wooster Street) and Modern (874 State Street), both in New Haven.
