Connecticut High School Tennis Championships All Played Indoors

CONNECTICUT — In some regards, the state championship matches in Connecticut high school tennis Thursday seemed like old times. Staples boys and girls swept the Class LL finals, winning titles for the fifth and third straight year, respectively. The boys from Darien and the girls from Daniel Hand each won their second consecutive championship, interrupted only by the coronavirus pandemic which canceled the spring season in 2020.

On the other side of the coin, Granby won a boys championship for the first time in more than four decades, while the girls team from Old Lyme won a state title for the first time ever. Adding to the mix was the fact that instead of Wesleyan University, the finals were contested at four different indoor venues, all in Hartford County, which proved to be a wise decision when rain began to fall.

It was a day when a No. 7 seed won a title, a No. 14 seed competed in the finals and just one of eight matchups featured the top two seeds. It was a day when tennis fans saw a little bit of everything.
