CT Coronavirus School Closure List

More than 20 school districts have had to temporarily switch at least one school to remote learning.

CONNECTICUT — More than 20 school districts in Connecticut have temporarily switched at least one school to remote learning due to coronavirus cases.

Districts face challenges beyond keeping the coronavirus contained once a member of a school community tests positive. One of the biggest challenges is the substitute teacher shortage.

Hillcrest Middle School in Trumbull had to switch to remote learning for two weeks after several teachers had to self-quarantine due to possible exposure. The lack of available substitute teachers was cited as the reason the school had to close.

Mask mandates and other precautions are enforced in schools, but another challenge is student behavior outside the school building. Fairfield Ludlowe High School had to close down for two days due to five cases at the school and as many as 100 people may have to self-quarantine after teens held several parties over a weekend.

Generally, schools don't need to close after one case, especially at the K-8 level where cohorting keeps groups of students isolated throughout the day, Gov. Ned Lamont said.
