CT School Custodian Dies From Coronavirus: Patch PM
Sports team quarantines/ Dulos investigation approaches $1M in overtime/ Battle over mandatory vaccinations/ Early voting push continues.
CONNECTICUT — The impacts of the coronavirus pandemic continue to show no end in sight.
- This week a Connecticut school system mourned the loss of a 59-year-old custodian who died from complications from the coronavirus. A local library also had to shut down due to several staffers contracting the virus. (See more: Custodian Dies From Coronavirus, Staff Test Positive).
- One positive case at another school in Connecticut has forced an entire sports team to have to quarantine, school officials said. All the teammates were identified as close contacts. (See more: Sports Team Quarantined After Positive Case: Superintendent)
- Connecticut continues to move swiftly in vaccinating its residents, especially in light of the new strain of the virus which has been detected here. And we received some good news today about those efforts.

- The situation with the vaccine isn't perfect though as demand continues to far outpace supply. A hospital and a local community had to cancel planned vaccination clinics due to a lack of vaccine. "We continue to do the best we possibly can with the resources we have to keep everyone updated and informed. Thank you for your patience and understanding," local officials said. (Read more here.)
Jennifer Dulos case update: Since Jennifer Dulos first disappeared on May 24, 2019, law enforcement has racked up nearly $1 million in overtime costs, according to a published report. Should vaccines in schools be mandatory?: A group of Republican lawmakers has submitted a bill that would allow "parents to avoid vaccinating their school-age children on “moral and philosophical” grounds," according to Hearst CT Media. Prominent Democrats oppose the measure and instead favor mandatory vaccinations, Hearst reports.>>>Read their full story here.

Early voting in CT?: Secretary of State Denise Merrill continues to push for early voting in CT and points to a new poll which she says shows bipartisan support for the measure.
"Connecticut is currently one of only seven states (along with Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, and South Carolina) that doesn’t allow their voters to cast a ballot prior to Election Day without an excuse," Merrill said.

The poll showed strong, bipartisan support for Early Voting, expanding access to absentee ballots for every voter without needing an excuse, and other common-sense election reforms that will make it easier for Connecticut citizens to participate in the election process. (2/3)
