CT Sees Growing Coronavirus Cases In Youths

CONNECTICUT — Connecticut reported another 130 new coronavirus cases out of nearly 13,000 tests, which kept the state’s positive test rate low. Still, there was growing concern about the number of teenagers and young adults who are becoming infected.

Connecticut also reported another six coronavirus-related deaths Thursday and a net increase of 13 hospitalizations, which brought the state’s current total to 66 patients. New hospital admissions have remained steady, but sometimes there are fewer daily discharges, Gov. Ned Lamont said.

There were 25 coronavirus infections per 100,000 people age 10-19 between July 19 and 25, according to the state Department of Public Health. The rate was 23 for those 20-29.

More than four out of every 10 new coronavirus cases in Connecticut were people 10-29 between July 19 and 25. Cases for people 10-19 doubled in the past week, Gov. Ned Lamont said.

The death rate for those age groups is lower than others, with one death among those 10-19 and four deaths in people 20-29. A big concern is that people in the age bracket will spread it to other vulnerable people, Lamont said.

There have been recent reports of large parties and similar gatherings attended by young people where mask use and social distancing are minimal, Lamont said.

Connecticut is far from alone, as teens and young adults represent a growing number of cases among many states, regardless of whether they have high transmission rates or not.
